- ➤ A statewide phone outage is disrupting 911 systems across Louisiana and Mississippi because a 911 fiber line was cut in Orleans Parish—Slidell residents should call 985-646-4201 or 985-646-4219 for emergencies while non-emergency calls are deferred. WDSU
- ➤ Parish President Mike Cooper and the St. Tammany Chamber PAC have traded accusations over the upcoming 2026 budget—Cooper disputes claims of wasteful spending as the Chamber PAC says parish figures are inflated. Cooper will present his proposed budget to the Parish Council on Oct. 2 as a forensic expert continues to review public records. The Times-Picayune
- ➤ Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser announced this week that Louisiana will crack down on littering and illegal dumping with tougher enforcement—using Act 67 to let state park rangers issue fines and a revamped hotline to gather reports. State agencies and Keep Louisiana Beautiful will work together and plan a waterway cleanup in September 2026. AN17
- ➤ Early voting begins tomorrow from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for local offices as voters in New Orleans will elect a sheriff, clerk, assessor, six city council members and a mayor while voters in St. Tammany, Jefferson and Terrebonne Parishes will choose a new mayor for Slidell, a mayor for Jean Lafitte and a Clerk of Court candidate respectively. Absentee ballots must be requested by October 7—election day is on October 11 and early voting will end on October 4 with polls closed on September 28. WWL-TV
- ➤ Landlords asked a federal judge to stop enforcing a local law that regulates housing for registered sex offenders until their challenge can be heard in court. The law sets rules for properties where 15% of residents are registered sex offenders by requiring a six-foot fence, a $5,000 fee and limits on occupancy—claims say it does not better protect minors. The Times-Picayune
- ➤ Incumbent Bill Borchert and police chief Randy Fandal are competing in the Slidell mayoral race as local residents review their options; election updates are expected over the coming days. FOX 8
- ➤ Four mayoral candidates traded jabs while discussing plans to fight crime, fix drainage, and upgrade infrastructure in a FOX 8 debate on leadership—each offering different ideas to address local challenges. FOX 8
