ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Louisiana Wildlife Federation is urging building owners, businesses and residents to shut off non-essential lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. during fall migration to help protect 500 million birds that pass through Louisiana—LWF member Charles Williams said bright lights can confuse birds and cause fatal crashes.  Louisiana Radio Network
  • Forecasters reported that a low-pressure system may bring rain — gusty winds and rough seas to the Gulf Coast, causing minor coastal flooding in southeast Louisiana until Sunday. Hurricane Imelda, which affected Bermuda yesterday, is forecast to weaken to a tropical storm by 2 p.m. today.  The Times-Picayune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The National Flood Insurance Program expired as the government shutdown continues, leaving homeowners without new or renewed flood policies during this active hurricane season—Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple warned that this gap may lead to costly problems if claims surge.  WWL-TV
