BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local coffee shops are facing higher costs from a 50% tariff on Brazilian coffee and rising global supply expenses — they are adapting methods to keep prices low for customers.  WWL-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents planning to vote in the Nov. 15 Municipal Parochial General Election must register in person by Oct. 15 at the offices in Covington and Slidell with a valid St. Tammany Parish ID, use online registration by Oct. 25, or mail applications by Nov. 14. Voters will decide on three millage proposals affecting recreation and fire protection taxes, and local officials will discuss a parcel fee renewal at the Military Road Alliance meeting on Oct. 8 at Boyet Junior High School — a key update for the community.  The Times-Picayune
  • Louisiana drivers with Farm Bureau auto insurance may see a nearly 12% premium reduction when their policies are renewed, as Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple approved the decrease — effective the first of next year — citing new reform legislation and lower-than-expected loss claims. Farm Bureau also reported adding more wind and hail coverage for homeowners following recent legislative changes.  WWL-TV
  • Early voting ends today for the October 11 primary, and pollster John Couvillon said 21,800 early votes have been cast in the mayor's race—up from 13,200 in 2021—and he expects 20,000 more votes when early voting concludes.  WWL-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Oct.2, Hammond forced a goal-line stand—stopping Slidell's final play and sealing a 35-28 win after the Tigers rallied from a 14-point deficit in the final minutes.  The Times-Picayune
  • University-Baton Rouge built an early lead — scoring two defensive touchdowns including a 99-yard fumble return — to secure a 36-25 win over St. Paul’s on Oct.3 at Hunter Stadium. Coach Kenny Sears said St. Paul’s needs to improve focus as it prepares for district play on Oct.10.  The Times-Picayune
