ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The tenth storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, Jerry, is forecast to reach hurricane strength by the end of the week as the season has produced fewer overall storms. LSU Health Climatologist Barry Keim said three major hurricanes have hit category 4 or 5 & more could develop.  WWL-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials have restored access for many investors to the START College Savings Program, allowing them to resume contributions—more details on account updates are expected soon.  FOX 8
  • Kathy Seiden—a St. Tammany council member—launched her U.S. Senate campaign yesterday as the first woman in the Louisiana GOP primary. She said she is running to address family struggles and has released a documentary series to show voters an unfiltered look at her journey while hiring a pollster to measure her race against incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy and other challengers.  WWL-TV
  • Hammond native and St. Tammany councilmember Kathy Seiden launched her U.S. Senate campaign on Wednesday to challenge incumbent Bill Cassidy — she said her run is based on a commitment to faith, family, and addressing everyday struggles.  WDSU
  • Gov. Jeff Landry planned a special legislative session beginning Oct. 23 to pass a new congressional map — but lawmakers dropped that plan and will instead adjust candidate qualifying dates to wait on a Supreme Court ruling on the Voting Rights Act case. Senate leaders, led by Sen. Caleb Kleinpeter, will guide changes to next year’s election schedule while facing challenges from federal and local rules.  The Times-Picayune
  • St. Tammany Sheriff's Office will pull security contracts from government buildings effective Dec. 31 due to a funding dispute with parish government over jail expenses—affecting staffing at the courthouse, Towers in Slidell, and the Justice Center. The move comes amid a long-running legal battle after voters repeatedly rejected tax propositions to fund jail costs since 2016.  The Times-Picayune
