EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Tammany Parish libraries offer age-tailored reading programs for children from toddlers to school-age readers including Storytime and Book Buddies drop-in sessions at the Covington branch on Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. — additional fall events include local branch concerts and used book sales set for Oct. 15, Oct. 17 to 18, and Oct. 29.  The Times-Picayune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state of Louisiana canceled its Mid-Breton sediment diversion project in Plaquemines Parish because costs surged from $90m to about $1.8b—forcing officials to seek new solutions for coastal restoration. This decision is a setback for efforts to rebuild wetlands along the Mississippi River.  WGNO
  • Louisiana’s START college savings accounts were partially restored after a cyber incident shut down the system last month—officials confirmed all accounts remain secure and under close watch. About 2,640 account holders logged in as of 9 a.m. Friday while 40,000 with email addresses will receive notifications as LOSFA staff continue processing delayed transactions.  WDSU

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lakeshore won a district football game against Franklinton on Oct. 10 at Titan Coliseum — the Titans secured a 41 to 27 win as junior quarterback Brody Loudermilk rushed 35 times for 196 yards and three touchdowns while also throwing for a score. The team played mistake-free football to complete the victory.  The Times-Picayune
  • On Oct. 10, the Rebels won by a score of 21 to 6 at Hawk Field as senior Gage Durand ran for 146 yards and scored three touchdowns—helping first-year coach Jerry Leonard set a strong tone for the team. They now prepare for a tough two-game stretch in district play.  The Times-Picayune
