COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Six women have been nominated for the East St. Tammany Athena Leadership Award — including Athena Young Professional Leadership Award winner Lauren Kaufmann Navarre — and will be honored at a November 5 luncheon at Pinewood Country Club in Slidell. The awards recognize community leaders for their work in education, outreach, and public service.  The Times-Picayune
  • A relief festival will be held on November 2nd at Florida Parishes Arena in Amite to raise funds for Smitty’s Supply employees who lost their jobs after an explosion in August—450 workers were affected. Gulf Coast Disaster Relief organizes the event and will host music, food, a car and motorcycle show and a silent auction while serving 1,000 portions of hot jambalaya to impacted families.  WDSU
  • New Orleans' famous rescue dog Scrim may have a brother after a dog from Terrebonne Parish Animal Shelter, found one block from where Scrim was discovered, was picked up and underwent DNA testing—Scrim’s owner Michelle Cheramie said his earlier test also showed he has a daughter named Bella in Slidell.  WDSU
  • Slidell’s annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner is scheduled for November 27 and will be hosted by Aldersgate United Methodist Church with over 37,200 meals served in past events. Volunteers + community groups will help deliver or allow pick up of meals including smoked turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and green beans, and orders or volunteer sign-ups must be completed by noon November 24 or until 1,400 meals are reserved.  The Times-Picayune
  • Hope House is a Northshore nonprofit that is set to serve more than 600 child abuse victims in 2025, with an average client age of 9. The organization is hosting its Heroes Who Cook fundraiser on Nov. 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. – 16 teams of local celebrities and restaurant owners will compete to raise donations for free therapy, advocacy, and support.  WDSU

ECONOMY NEWS

  • ChillCo Inc. announced its $4.4 million expansion that will add 38 new jobs and keep 68 positions at its St. Tammany headquarters by expanding manufacturing and warehouse space— officials said the effort is part of an $8 million statewide plan that includes a new Baton Rouge remanufacturing facility.  The Times-Picayune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gregory Jacob Jr., a Carver High alum, shared his missed prostate cancer diagnosis and family silence to urge better awareness. He takes his advocacy from the classroom to Capitol Hill—hoping to spark national change.  WWL-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Saints will start rookie quarterback Tyler Shough on Sunday in their game against the Los Angeles Rams after Spencer Rattler was benched during last week's 23 to 3 loss to Tampa Bay. Coach Kellen Moore (citing six turnovers) announced the change as the team looks to improve its offense (ranked 27th in the league).  WWL-TV
