ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A portion of the Tangipahoa River reopened on Friday, Oct. 31 from Lees Landing south to Lake Pontchartrain after cleanup began following a Smitty Supply explosion (boom operations continue and the No Wake Zone remains in effect), ensuring the waterway stays safe for public use.  WDSU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Louisiana Department of Health announced that starting November 1, SNAP households with elderly, disabled, or children will receive 25% of their benefit on the scheduled date and an extra 25% every seven days in November if the shutdown continues — households with only able-bodied adults will not get this aid. The department also furloughed 786 SNAP employees effective November 3 while keeping 298 essential workers on duty until the federal shutdown ends.  AN17
  • The Louisiana Department of Health announced state-funded emergency assistance for SNAP households that include seniors, children, and people with disabilities starting today; 25% of the benefit will be provided on the normal issue date. An extra 25% will be added every seven days in November if the government shutdown continues — households with only able-bodied adults will not be eligible while unused benefits stay on EBT cards.  WDSU
  • The Louisiana Department of Health announced that eligible SNAP households with elderly, disabled or children will receive state-funded emergency benefits—25% issued today and another 25% every seven days in November—while households with only able-bodied adults will not get extra funds. SNAP employee furloughs affecting 786 workers will begin on November 3 and continue until the shutdown ends.  WGNO
  • Louisiana won three awards at the JRNY America Awards, including State of the Year, while New Orleans received honors for Best Food City and Best New Tourism initiative for the new Amtrak Mardi Gras service connecting New Orleans—Mobile with stops in Mississippi. Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser said the awards highlight the state’s many attractions like Cajun country and excellent outdoor recreation.  Louisiana Radio Network
  • DOTD and state partners held a press conference to promote Buckle Up, Phone Down Day and urged drivers to wear seat belts and keep phones out of reach — officials pointed out that distracted driving was linked to 25% of crash deaths in 2024. High school students joined in the effort through a video contest, and authorities stressed that these safe habits are key to lowering roadway fatalities.  AN17

  • LCMC Health reached a verbal agreement with UnitedHealthcare on Oct 31—ensuring that patients keep their in-network coverage as open enrollment begins today.  WGNO
