- ➤ Kathryn Townsend received the 2025 Athena Leadership Award on Nov. 5 at Pinewood Country Club for her strong faith, work ethic, and community service—and she was honored along with Lauren Kaufmann Navarre, who supports leadership in young women. The Times-Picayune
- ➤ Louisiana attorney Gordon McKernan, who remembers his first bike—an exciting memory—will give away 600 bikes and helmets to children this holiday season in eight cities. Registration opened on Nov. 10—it closes on Dec. 1 for Alexandria, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Monroe and Shreveport and on Dec. 7 for Baton Rouge, Hammond and New Orleans—and winners will be picked at random. - ➤ A strong cold front moved into southeast Louisiana on Monday, dropping temperatures 20 to 25 degrees below average and prompting impact day and red flag warnings due to gusty winds. Today, the Northshore may see a brief freeze in the morning and later high temperatures will reach the low 60s—residents are advised to protect pets, plants and pipes. WDSU
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Louisiana veterans saw a 6% rise in VA benefits from fiscal year 2023 to fiscal year 2024, tripling the national increase and helping over 82,000 veterans get more than $2 billion in compensation—Louisiana VA Secretary Charlton Meginley said local outreach events boosted support programs, including a 9% rise in GI Bill use. - ➤ Louisiana's fortified roof program reached 10,000 installed roofs, including 4,000 funded by grants, as stated by Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple on November 10. Roof grants for 1,000 coastal homes will be available starting Wednesday—helping residents protect against high winds and severe storms. WDSU
- ➤ Marine Corps veteran and parish council member Pat Phillips sponsored an ordinance to reduce parish occupational license fees for veteran-owned businesses by $500 starting Jan. 1, 2026—affecting 31 licensed businesses with 21 paying nothing and 10 receiving the discount. The ordinance passed in August and follows Phillips' efforts to ease veterans' transition to civilian life. The Times-Picayune

- ➤ Louisiana Department of Health confirmed an adult contracted measles after international travel and exposed others at New Orleans Airport Concourse B on November 9 from 5 to 8:30 p.m.—the patient was not hospitalized and stays in isolation while officials note measles can remain in the air for up to 2 hours after an infected person leaves. - ➤ A WalletHub study found that Louisiana ranked 4th in obesity and 1st for adults eating fewer than one serving of fruits or vegetables per day—raising serious health concerns. The report showed high levels of physical inactivity and obesity cost the U.S. healthcare system about $173 billion every year—underscoring the ongoing public health challenge. WGNO
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Six St. Tammany Parish volleyball teams, including defending state champions Slidell and Northlake Christian, will compete in the LHSAA state tournament at the Cajundome in Lafayette starting Thursday—teams will first play quarterfinals and then advance in later rounds if they win. The state tournament will feature matchups across Division I, II, III, and IV with local schools aiming to continue their winning streak. The Times-Picayune
