COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nonprofits are calling on residents to donate holiday essentials for families facing financial hardship; NAMI is preparing gifts for 1,200 people at care centers while the Salvation Army seeks 500 angel adoptions through programs at Walmart in Slidell and Dillard's at Lakeside Shopping Center.  WDSU
  • Northshore Humane Society experienced a kennel fire on Dec. 3 caused by an electrical issue while using a heater to warm larger dogs — all animals were rescued unharmed. Community members now foster many pets and local business owners donated $1,000 to help fund a new shelter.  WDSU
  • A heater malfunction caused a fire yesterday at Northshore Humane Society, and staff evacuated all the animals safely— the damaged kennel now lacks heating during this cold snap so locals are urged to foster the pets until repairs begin.  WWL-TV
  • Dogs displaced by a Tuesday electrical fire at Northshore Humane Society's Covington facility were safely rescued and volunteer fosters responded quickly (though more homes are still needed). The group is fundraising for a new $13M facility on donated land on Harrison Avenue to replace its 70-year-old building.  The Times-Picayune

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA announced a recall for over 260,000 cases of shredded cheese sold at stores including Target+ Walmart+ Aldi due to potential metal contamination. Consumers in Louisiana are urged to check product labels to avoid risks to dental and digestive health.  The Times-Picayune

  • On Dec. 2, Hannan girls soccer defeated Lakeshore 4-0 at Titan Coliseum as coach Nathaniel Peters credited early goals by Hannah Hessel and senior Kaitlyn Brady for a strong win—marking the Hawks’ fourth straight victory.  The Times-Picayune
