COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The US Marine Corps Reserve Band performed at Harbor Center on Dec. 3, collecting toys and donations for Toys for Tots-St. Tammany, Tangipahoa & Washington parishes. The festive concert brought the community together with holiday music to support families during Christmas.  The Times-Picayune
  • Debbie Thompson has been named executive director of One Way Love to lead programs that aid at risk youth in St. Tammany Parish. She succeeds Travis Manint and will broaden support services as the organization partners with schools and hosts a holiday gift card drive.  The Times-Picayune

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Northshore Community Orchestra is set to perform a free holiday concert at Slidell Municipal Auditorium on Dec. 18; doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the performance starts at 7 p.m.  The Times-Picayune
  • St. Timothy’s Christmas concert on Dec. 14 will feature 62 choir members, soloists, and the North Shore Orchestra at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. as volunteer Julie Green and a 15-member team dress the sanctuary (a longstanding community tradition) to set a festive scene with free admission and first-come seating.  The Times-Picayune
  • Greg Scott returned as curator of the Slidell Museum to oversee operations and share the city’s history with citizens and visitors. The museum, at 2020 First St. (Olde Towne), welcomes group tours and community events as he resumes his long-time role.  The Times-Picayune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • LSU AgCenter extension agent Todd Fontenot says the outlook for the 2026 crawfish season is positive due to favorable weather, with hot boiled crawfish available now along the coast. He expects more crawfish in January and February if freezing temperatures remain short.  Louisiana Radio Network

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Louisiana Department of Health announced that UnitedHealthcare’s Medicaid contract will not be renewed when it expires Dec. 31, affecting 333,246 enrollees who will be moved to one of five new providers statewide. Attorney General Liz Murrill urged patients to contact their caseworker for timely primary care.  WDSU
  • Louisiana will not renew its Medicaid contract with UnitedHealthcare that covers 345,000 members, and will shift them to other plans after Dec. 31. The state renewed its contract with Aetna for 2026.  The Times-Picayune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Setter Ava Labat surpassed 4,200 career assists last season and signed with Loyola-New Orleans on Dec. 8 to play indoor + beach volleyball. Labat helped her team win back-to-back state championships and marked a highlight in her high school career.  The Times-Picayune
  • The St. Tammany Farmer All-Parish Cross-Country teams showed impressive performances at the state meet. Northshore sophomore Grace Keene broke records to win the Division I title while Noah Watson finished fifth and other runners from Mandeville, Northshore and St. Paul's achieved notable improvements.  The Times-Picayune
