- ➤ A Slidell traffic stop on May 14 near West End Boulevard led detectives to arrest 38-year-old convicted felon Antwine Smith after he fled on foot and officers seized a gun, drugs and money—he now faces several charges. AN17
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Fifteen children aged 5-16 from local areas received summer arts camp scholarships from the Tangipahoa-based sNoBalls parading group to study music, theater, dance, and visual arts. - ➤ Louisiana Highway Safety is urging drivers to buckle up this Memorial Day weekend to avoid a $50 fine under its Click It or Ticket campaign — spokesperson Mark Lambert said the initiative aims to lower crash fatalities since nearly half of those killed in accidents were not wearing seat belts. - ➤ St. Tammany Health System unveiled Abbott’s new GLP systems Track automated laboratory solution at its flagship Covington hospital this month—this first installation in Louisiana uses Smart CAR Technology to cut manual tasks by 80% and speed up test results for patients. AN17
- ➤ The Louisiana Department of Health reminded families to practice safe swimming as summer nears, noting that 62 children drowned from 2021 to 2023—most without adult supervision—and many were hospitalized due to nonfatal incidents.
